Alliance for Inclusive AI: a global initiative to democratise artificial intelligence

The new Alliance for Inclusive AI has been launched, an open global coalition with the aim of ensuring that the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) reach billions of people, not just an elite.

The initiative aims to provide responsible and practical AI solutions to 100 million people and to mobilise $100 million in blended finance by 2030, addressing the risk that AI could exacerbate existing inequalities.

The Urgency of Accessible AI

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming economies and public services globally. However, access to these technologies remains uneven. Countries and communities lacking the necessary technological infrastructure, skills, or infrastructure risk being left behind. Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, emphasised that while "Big AI will increase disparities, 'Small AI' – local models on local devices – can be highly productive for disadvantaged communities."

Pillars of the Initiative

The Alliance for Inclusive AI focuses on six key areas to achieve its ambitious goals:

  1. Building Foundational AI Infrastructure: Develop AI infrastructure tailored for emerging markets.

  2. Practical AI Solutions for the Underserved: Provide practical AI solutions, particularly "Small AI," that address the needs of disadvantaged populations.

  3. Developing Local Talent: Partner with universities to train local talent in responsible AI.

  4. Tools for Low-Resource Environments: Create operational tools that work effectively in environments with limited connectivity and few resources.

  5. Supporting Governments and Regulators: Assist governments, development finance institutions (DFIs), regulators, and regional bodies in designing and implementing inclusive AI strategies.

  6. Shared Repositories: Establish common repositories of datasets, case studies, and toolkits to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing.

A Call for Collaboration

Jessica Osborn, CEO of Caribou, highlighted the importance of marginalised communities' participation in shaping AI: "AI will only create real impact when marginalised communities help shape it." The Alliance actively invites technology providers, investors, governments, research institutions, and civil society groups to join this initiative to ensure AI becomes a tool for equitable growth worldwide.
